How many birds do you have: 7
Bird Species in Your Flock: GW Macaw, U2 & G2, Hawkhead, Red Lored Amazon, Timneh Grey, Cockatiel!
Ever since Spike was a chick, he has loved dog food. He will fly over to the dogs bowl just to get and eat a few kernels. Then the other birds think he has something like a treat and then they all yell for one.
I cannot keep Spike out of the dog food. Any ideas?

LOL! Not laughing at the dilemma, but at the mental image you painted. I don't have any valuable advice either. Is dog food potentially "bad" for birds?

Yes, it has a much higher bacteria count than what is safe for birds. It's also too high in fats/proteins/etc. Cat food is even worse.

Kathy, dogs shouldn't free feed if that is what you are doing. If not, simply put Spike up until pooch eats his dinner. Or if you insist on free feeding have the bowl down while at work, put the bowl up once home and the birds are out, put bowl back down when you put birds to bed. Same can be done on weekends. Bowl down when you are gone/birds are in, bowl up when he is out.

I had a feeling M2 knew the answer to the dog food Q. Good suggestions on times for the feeding, too. Time for a food container I suppose. Maybe one of those old metal trash cans is tough enough to keep a bird out? (Again, stupid humor, but I still have the picture in my head.)

Yeah, duh! Sealed container. I knew that all along.

As for your mental picture HB, I have old pictures of Spike actually attacking the dog eating the dog food.

1 Sun Conure
2 Congo African Greys
2 Green-Wing Macaws

I keep the dog food in an old container that at some time was bought with popcorn in. The lid is stiff enough that even the big can-opener beaks can't get it off. ;)
Remember AR lived on dog food for a year before she came, and just how sick she was? I still get the willies when I think about it. I won't even let them drink out of the dog's water dish.
Yup, put the food up when Spike is doing his travels!
