This above is a web site completely dedicated to the Quaker Parrot, as to all aspects of their personalities, behavior, feeding, etc. Before anyone can change behavior, the parrots needs to totally trust the people or person in their life. Your 15 year old son needs to spend a lot of time gaining your Quaker's trust. You never really "control" your parrot, you learn how to interact with them. I wish you good luck.

How long have you had him? Kay is right you can learn to interact with him but not control
him. I have had a quacker for many years, they are smart and witty and especially
fearless. Give more info so we can help. BTW we love pictures

Hello and Welcome to SCB. Yes, we would need some more information to try and help. What is he being fed? Any changes in the home?
There are a lot of things that could be going on. Has he been to a vet?

We look forward to getting to know you and your bird (and family) more.

I have two quakers and I have a couple friends that have a few, too. They are very complex little birds. Very smart and can learn to be very manipulative. My one quaker is a perfect angel (for me) and the other came from a bad past and will always have problems.

Quakers are control freaks and like things their way. They are aware of every change in their environment and can be very vocal when they notice change. In the wild they live in large, protective flocks where they watch over the huge community nest and need to be aware of any little thing that could threaten their flock security.

I give my quakers jobs. I post the one at a point in the house where she can do "sentry duty". I let her loudly comment on strange goings on in the backyard. She can see out windows on three sides of the house from her cage, and she watches over us all and is very proud of her job. The other quaker is the timekeeper. She tells us all when it's time to wake up, when it's time to eat and when it's time to go to bed. She is an incredible clock. My friends one quaker has a job also. His job is to keep the dogs in line by scolding them. If quakers like to be bossy, I think it's okay to give them something to be bossy about. Another one of my friends' quakers is a weaver, and makes huge constructions out of leather strands and twigs. If a quaker has more to do, it helps with the squawking.

My one quaker (Kuiper) is very protective of her cage and food bowls (most quakers are). I can lure her over to the other side of the cage to get her bowls out. I put the bowls on the door of her cage, so when I swing it out, I have more time to grab the bowls before she charges. We also stick trained her so she will step up on the stick and we can remove her from the room so we can deal with her cage.

When Kuiper came to us, she was unable to be handled. We had to slowly work with her out of sight of her cage to earn her trust. It took a long time, but now I can hold her and kiss her on the back and tickle her feet, and Jim can hold her upside down in his hand. We didn't teach her to be nice, we just simply earned her trust. We used treats, toys, making funny noises and songs with her. We spent time with her every day, even when she was grumpy. I can't imagine living without her now. She is our funniest bird. Sometimes she still nips, especially when she's mad after I have been away for a couple days, but she comes around after she's made her point.
