IM, we use a Blueair 501. Run it wide open all day, and at next to last setting all night. Cannot really hear it at the night setting.

The filters are $ 79. a set, and must be changed every six months. Not just the mfr. reccomendation, but experience as well.

At the three month mark, I take the filters outside and blast them with compressed air from my compressor. I looks like a fire with all the dust that comes out!

Sunny has posted and I believe uses a 14 to 20" regular fan with a furnace filter taped onto it. The 3M Filtrete type filters would work very well for this, as they are hepa quality.

I just searched and they are avail. in 14 x 14, 16 x 16, 18 x 18, 20 x 20. A six pack of the 20 x 20 was $ 62.00 plus shipping. Just looked at one site.

You could tape them on, wire tie (zip-tie), as long as all the fan from the air goes into the filter.

There a many hepa units out there, all the good ones are expensive and the filters are very expensive. The Blueair charges the inlet air very slightly, and there is no ozone created. Ozone around the birds is an absolute no-no as it can burn their lungs and air sacs. I use an ozone generator on our 100 gal. salt water tank, and use activated carbon to make sure the O3 does not get into the house air.

OK, I'm exhausted, fingers are cramped from typing, and as usual, I just went on and on and on .........

Need more info, just ask. BTW, 501 is 499. at this site, with free 3 day shipping

Check out http://IQair.com . That's where we got ours. We got this model ( http://www.iqair.us/home_products_healt ... mpact.html ) and are very pleased with it. We turn it up at night to mask outside noise instead of running the sound machine now. Daytime We run it at a lower speed when we don't have the windows open.

Edited to add: This unit is extremely easy to change out the filters.

1. Friedrich
2. Kenmore (Sears) Whirlpool
3. Whirlpool
4. Honeywell
5. Vornado
6. Blueair

With the Friedrich and Whirlpool being the two favored of the group. Blueair was excellent in removing dust at high speeds, but noise levels at those speeds was poor.

Yes, I do use a box fan w/ house filter. The box fan requires some simple modifications to use a 20x20 house filter. I think it depends on the level of dust in your home as to what you would need.

There is not an air filter out there that could possibly keep up w/ the amount of dander produced by the number of birds I have ... w/ 6 being cockatoos. Not only that but I could not afford the replacement costs of the filters for "real" air cleaners. Even filters that say that they only need replacing every so often ... even w/ daily maintenance, I have found that the 'Too dust becomes too clogged for the life of the recommended usage. My 'Toos have burned out air filters and they have burned out box fans, LOL ... I find the box fans much more reasonable to replace on an annual basis. Never mind the filter replacement costs as often as I have to do it I use 3M Filtrete 1000 micron allergen filter).

This is how I use the box fan, around it is a box I built to keep the birds away from any dangers. http://pets.webshots.com/photo/27349628 ... 5051gZcTHp
I also use a window fan that can either be set at dual exhaust, one intake one exhaust, or dual intake during the months that the weather is permissible. http://community.webshots.com/photo/514 ... 5051XNctBn

I think my home is the exception and not the rule though for the amount of dust I have .... but it is an affordable option to any who have birds. It simply affords me more "units" at an affordable price and filter replacement.

I knew I could count on you guys... thank you... I don't see any dust as am not really having much of a big, big issue with not having a too but know that having a grey with B&G could pose problems down the line so hopefully want to avert that issue... kids' asthma is aokay but have dealt with National Allergy stuff before so know the "human" aspect before, not just birdie stuff but after reading all Cathy is going through....OMG bringing back kids stuff with nebs and stuff can't imagine doing that with Izzy in a box (poor Doc, again and Cathy) didn't know if I was getting paranoid or whether this was the way to go with grey and B&G together up here - do have central air but don't really use it much, am a "windows open" person but really want to scout out this situation....saw one on the National Allergy site which filters have to be replaced every five years... anyone heard of it... http://www.natlallergy.com/allergy/prod ... fiers.html

Pros/Cons anyone?

Again, thanks for advice everyone....

Can you describe in more depth how you devise your box fan into a filter?

M2Mom, I noticed you have your window fan with the filter on the front of the fan. I have my filter on the back of the fan trapping the dust before it gets into the fan - is that really not the 'right' way ??

Well some box fans are actually bigger than the 20x20 filter (even though the fan is supposed to be a 20x20. On these fans I will make a cardboard cut out and tape a "lip" around the back of the fan. Some fans are small enough that you can simply use wide tape (I put newspaper under the tape to keep it from sticking to the grate).
http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/pho ... 5051HYSxhM
By putting this "lip" on the fan it ensures that the flow of air is not by-passing the filter; which would happen ... you know the path of least resistance thing.

There are many ways you can secure the filter ... you can tape it on (which I don't do because it prevents me from being able to tap out the filters daily), You can use metal "L brackets" (support bracket, reinforcement brackets
http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/pho ... 5051BqxNgV
http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/pho ... 5051mLAgQN
... I've heard them called many things) to make a holder for the filter.
http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/pho ... 5051mdLWWK
Just drill holes in the metal frame of the fan. 2 brackets on the bottom, 2 on each of the sides and secure to the fan w/ the enclosed screws. Make sure you get the brackets that are large enough to not only secure to the fan but to have room to slide your filter in and out for cleaning. Put the filter (turning the fan on helps keep it sucked in place) against the fan, put the brackets on so that it is a snug fit but not too tight that you can not remove the filter), mark the screw holes w/ a magic marker so you know exactly where to drill.
http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/pho ... 5051mudDfy You can also simply use small bungee cords to strap the filter to the fan. I like the brackets because it makes for easy/fast removal.

You have to keep it back from the wall a few inches (like 12) in order for the air to be able to go thru w/o "bouncing back" into the fan and reducing suction. You can also angle it. As you see I have done here (it actually sucks better that way). If you have any small cages around they work great to protect the fan as you see in the pic just remove the bottom. fan in cage

Kathy, the filter isn't on the front? If you are talking about the window fan there is no filter on that ... no need for one being it is blowing directly outside. If you are talking about the actual box fan .... that is the back. I built a case around the fan because I got tired of the knobs being chewed off. The case is nothing more than plastic lattice, pre-made shelfs (held together w/ "L brackets" again) an attached handle for lifting it off. It is a 3 sided case w/ no bottom so I can easily lift it off the fan to clean the filter.

So then you are saying that you have the filter on the back of the fan, and the front of the fan is exposed? Then I see the front of your fan is positioned to blow toward the wall, is this correct?

This was the problem I was facing. We are having a hard time finding homes so far for all the rescues so right now they are all around the perimeter room with no area to blow air on without hitting a bird. (there's only nine total I sound like I live with a hundred!) I did the box fan thing before, but I blew it out the window. Of course, that only solves the problem for very few months in this area. I never thought about blowing it straight into the wall...I suppose I thought it wouldn't work as well. If that indeed is what you are doing and it works for ya, great! I will go today and buy the stuff! THANK YOU! This will definitely save a bundle on air filters!

Yes you got it filters on back ... I blow it toward the wall. Just make sure it's back from the wall far enough so the air does not "bounce" back into the fan. If you have the fan pointed at the wall and far enough back the air will bounce off the wall and travel the wall (up and to each side) creating a very mild breeze circulating around the room and blowing the dust/dander/feathers back toward the fan because that is the only area of suction. (Wish I knew how to make an animated drawing.) Also as I said ... the fans work very well when angled like the one in the cage.

New box design. You no longer need to do the tape and paper, etc. If you build a box 25x25 you can use that size filter. I made channels in the box and now the filter slips in and out easily for changing. The cord of the fan has been reversed to come out the front so should one of the birds chew the filter, they can not reach the cord. A 25x25 box allows more air flow and the top is "vented" w/ lattice for air escape.

GOT IT! Thank you for explaining it for me so good. I'm one of those people who has people ask, "Do you want me to draw it for you??" haha That's me! You did explain it good, and I now can see why you have the fan tilted...hubby's on his way home and I already have him quite the "honey-do" list already!

For some reason, I doubt you will see HIM on here thanking you ;)
But I definitely will! Thanks again! You just saved me bundles![/i]

I know this is an older thread. But hey im new, i want to chime in.

I have a Honeywell True Hepa Round Air Purifier ( 374 sq. ft.) in my 9x12ft (110 sq. ft.) bird room.

Key Points:
- Removes 99.9% of all airborne particles and up to 100% of bacteria and germs
- 250 CADR for large room sizes (374 sq. ft.) (This is way excessive over twice the footage of my bird room, but im hoping to expand in the future)
- Easy-to-clean lifetime Hepa filter can be vacuumed and never needs replacing (Vacuum/air compressor, replacement filters are only $30)
- Intelli-check electronic filter cleaning reminder
- Activated carbon pre-filter helps reduce odours (I love this!)
- Patented 360° air intake and discharge
- Three speed levels (Loud, louder, and i cant hear the birds anymore ;)
- AHAM certified

I got it on sale for $250ish CDN, and it has done wonders, granted i only have 3 cocktiels and a budgie inhabiting the room but i have noticed a extreme improvement on air quality and it really helps keep down any oders and cockatiel dust.

I do have two gripes about it 1) design flaw means you have to unscrew the base then remove the top/motor cover, to get to the filter. Luckily this does not need to be done to often. 2) Its kinda loud, however i think its louder because its designed for a much bigger room. Recent remodel of the bird room also does not have anything to dampen sound (carpet, wall hangings, etc.) I keep it on the lowest setting it does not bother me, or the birds its kinda like white noise.

I use the Honeywell True HEPA permanent filter. This way I don't have to replace the filter all the time, I just vacuum it off. You're supposed to have to clean it every 3 months, but with a cockatoo in the house, it lasts about a week. It has COMPLETELY elimintated my parents' allergies and I love not having to replace things all the time. I've heard from other people, though, that you have to replace the pre-filter every year or two years because you clean it so often. But the filters are only $20, so it's worth it.
